No. 16 Iowa hoops soared in Tom Davisr17; first season
IOWA CITY, Iowa r12; The standard for Iowa menr17;s basketball teams the last 30 years was set in 1986 87, and none have since measured up.
The superlatives from that season appear on a screen like a bullet point agenda for a hall of fame candidacy. Thirty total victories. An 18 0 record to open the year. The entire season ranked in the top 10. Three consecutive Big Ten wins over top 10 opponents. A deep NCAA Tournament finish that ended with an Elite Eight collapse.
The season began with a departure. Coach George Raveling, who assembled one of the great rosters in Big Ten basketball history, left for USC after three seasons at Iowa. Filling that void was Wisconsin native and former Stanford coach Tom Davis. He was quiet, confident and demanding. Davis was the third Iowa coach in five years.
r0;Ir17;ve said this before I appreciate the talent that I was left by Coach Raveling and Coach [Lute] Olson and their recruiting efforts over the previous years, so I inherited some really good, talented guys,r1; Davis said before the 25th reunion in 2012. r0;We enjoyed the fruits of their labor in the years following.r1; The Hawkeyes could play 10 deep with any team in the country.
The team took part in a summer tour of Korea and China, which helped build chemistry and allowed Davis to tinker with lineups. Davis brought an up tempo style of play that included a full court press. He emphasized rebounding, and the Hawkeyes led the nation in rebounding margin that year at 12.6.
r0;That was invaluable,r1; Davis said, r0;because you had a chance to experiment with not just a style of play but positioning. Positioning is important when you inherit players. Where you see them playing on the court might be different from what the previous staff thought they could do.r1;
Training camp and preseason practices were intense. Star scorer Roy Marble, who died from cancer in 2015, called it a r0;boot campr1; before the 2012 reunion.
r0;He took a long time figuring out a starting lineup because he was like, r16;How do I maximize all this talent?r17;r1; Marble said in 2012. r0;We banged each other so hard, thatr17;s so important. Your17;re not dealing with a bunch of average guys. It wasnr17;t clear who was going to be playing. So we whupped each otherr17;s butts .r1;
Iowa Hawkeyes, Roy Marble
Iowar17;s all time scoring leader Roy Marble is interviewed by venerable Bob Brooks and Scott Dochterman in 2015. Marble passed away later that year, and Brooks died in 2016. Scott Dochterman/Land of 10
The next man in philosophy led to extraordinary results. Athletic forward Gerry Wright broke his hand and guard Michael Reaves was injured. Taking their places were sophomores Ed Horton and point guard B.J. Armstrong fifth in career scoring at 1,705 points . Marble, who is the schoolr17;s all time leading scorer with 2,116 points, slid from off guard to small forward to make room for senior Kevin Gamble. Brad Lohaus was a reserve under Raveling and blossomed into a star center.
r0;I walked in there, I was playing center,r1; Lohaus said in 2012. r0;I weighed about 200 pounds. It just wasnr17;t working. Coach Davis came in and gave me all the confidence in the world. That was the biggest thing. Then to play the point on the press, top of the key on the trail, it made my career for me, without a doubt.
r0;To me Davis brought in here a winning attitude, integrity. Her17;s just one of those guys, itr17;s hard to describe because over the years I thought about r30; you think Dr. Tom Davis, her17;s a winner everywhere that he goes. I didnr17;t know the guy at the time. When he came here we thought wer17;d give him a chance laughing .r1;
Regular season success
Davisr17; debut immediately vaulted the Hawkeyes into the AP top 5. Iowa won the Great Alaska Shootout and beat No. 17 North Carolina State r12; which edged Iowa in the 1986 NCAA Tournament r12; 90 89 in overtime. The Hawkeyes coasted through most of its non conference schedule with a 12 0 mark entering Big Ten action.
Iowa won its first three league games against Northwestern, Wisconsin and Minnesota by a combined 72 points. But the next three games would prove a gauntlet few teams could match. The No. 2 ranked Hawkeyes had consecutive road games set for No. 8 Illinois and No. 6 Purdue followed by a home game against No. 3 Indiana.
First up was a trip to Iowar17;s traditional house of horrors in Champaign, Ill. As usual, the Hawkeyes fell behind and trailed the Fighting Illini by 22 points early in the second half. Then Iowa rallied and forced overtime. It was too much at the time for Bertie Marble, Royr17;s mother.
r0;She went to her room and prayed because she couldnr17;t take how bad we were getting beat,r1; Roy Marble said in 2012. r0;She prayed that wer17;d win. When she went to bed and she woke up, she called me hollering, r16;There is a God.r17;r1;
The Hawkeyes prevailed 91 88, which stood as the schoolr17;s greatest statistical comeback until 2012. Numbers aside, no rally could compare to one in a blood feud like Iowa Illinois, especially with the Fighting Illini ranked in the top 10.
Five days later, the Hawkeyes beat Purdue 70 67 at Mackey Arena. After moving to No. 1, the Hawkeyes finished the three game run with a 101 88 win against Indiana, the first time a Bob Knight team had given up 100 points in Big Ten play.
r0;That run didnr17;t surprise us,r1; Marble said in 2012. r0;We never knew about it, because we were so intense with each other every day.r1;
Ranked No. 1 with an 18 0 overall mark and a 6 0 Big Ten record, opponents targeted the Hawkeyes. They lost three of their next six games. In what turned out to be a de facto Big Ten championship game, eventual national champion Indiana gained revenge with an 84 75 victory in Bloomington, Ind.
Iowa closed out the regular season with wins over Michigan State, Michigan and Northwestern by a combined 66 points to finish 14 4 in Big Ten play and a game behind Indiana and Purdue.
Postseason highs and lows
No. 6 ranked Iowa earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and buried Santa Clara by 23 points in the first game. Then in a stiff challenge from UTEP and guard Tim Hardaway, the Hawkeyes rallied 84 82 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
The next matchup was set against No. 17 and third seeded Oklahoma. In overtime, the Hawkeyes led 90 85. The Sooners followed with a 6 0 run to go up 91 90. With the shot clock off, Marble drove the lane and missed a shot off the glass. The ball caromed out of bounds with 11 seconds left but the Hawkeyes kept the ball.
With 7 seconds left, Armstrong drove right, then passed to Gamble at the top of the key. Gamble knocked down the 3 pointer with 2 seconds left to give Iowa the 93 91 win and send the Hawkeyes to the Elite Eight.
Gamble still relishes the chance to watch that shot.
r0;You still get goosebumps from it,r1; Gamble said in 2012. r0;Itr17;s a special time in my life and to be able to share it with your teammates when you come back and reminisce is a lot of fun.r1;
Iowa capitalized on its positive success in a showdown with top ranked UNLV in the West Region final. The Hawkeyes drilled 21 of 29 first half shots to take a 16 point halftime lead. Iowa was 23 0 that year when leading at halftime. But UNLV countered with a 34 10 second half run and took an 82 81 edge inside the final minute.
The Hawkeyesr17; full court press caused UNLV to commit a 10 second violation with 22 seconds left. Then with 14 seconds remaining, Gambler17;s lob pass to Lohaus under the basket bounced off the side of the backboard and went out of bounds to give the Runninr17; Rebels the ball. Two free throws later, Iowa had one more chance. Gamble took a 3 point attempt with 1 second left, but it bounced off the rim. Iowar17;s season ended at 30 5.
r0;When itr17;s the last game of the year, itr17;s always the toughest one to lose,r1; Davis said. r0;When your17;ve got other games facing you, you can kind of bounce back. But when your17;re not going to play again for several months, itr17;s kind of hard. You felt sorry for the three seniors, Kevin Gamble, Gerry Wright and Brad Lohaus. They couldnr17;t have given any more for that team and worked any harder. We knew had some talent coming back, but you just felt bad for the three seniors.r1;
Legacy
With 30 wins Marshall Thorpe Jersey, the 1986 87 team stands alone in Iowa history for the most victories. No other squad has more than 25. Armstrong and Marble were first round NBA picks a few years later. Armstrong played 11 seasons, scored 7,320 points and won three NBA titles. Lohaus, a second round pick of Boston, also played 11 NBA seasons. Gamble was a third round pick in Portland and played 10 years in the NBA. Horton and Marble also spent time in the NBA.
At the 2015 Final Four in which his Wisconsin Badgers advanced to the title game, assistant coach Gary Close was asked which team was better, the 2015 Badgers or the 1987 Hawkeyes. Close was in his first year at Iowa in 1987.
r0;Thatr17;s a real tough question,r1; Close said. r0;Thatr17;s two really talented teams. I donr17;t know if I even want to stick my neck out on that one.r1;
With a core of Marble, Armstrong C.J. Cole Jersey, Horton, Jeff Moe, Bill Jones and Al Lorenzen, the Hawkeyes advanced to the 1988 Sweet Sixteen. A year later https://www.oklahomabasketballjersey.com/daniel-harper-jersey-c-13.html, Iowa spent the first three months ranked in the top 10 but lost in the NCAA second round to N.C. State in overtime.
Even 30 years later, therer17;s an incomplete mystique that hovers around the 1986 87 Hawkeyes. Therer17;s no Big Ten title banner hanging at Carver Hawkeye Arena. Elite Eight teams donr17;t earn plaudits for coming close. For many fans of that era, itr17;s as if a blink or a head nod could scrub away the UNLV defeat and vault Iowa into the Final Four. Then the special squad would get the respect it deserves.
r0;One of the most depressing weekends you could spend in New Orleans was going to the Final Four, Coach Close and I and our families, and not bringing our basketball team,r1; said former Iowa assistant Bruce Pearl, now head coach at Auburn, at the 2012 reunion. r0;Because I think we could have gone there r12; Indiana won it.
r0;I think we would have won it.r1; |
